Leprosy

Leprosy which is also known as Hansen’s disease is a long-term infection by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. Infections usually occur without any symptoms in the early stages. Leprosy is a contagious disease spreading through coughs or contact with fluid from the nose of an infected person. Detection of leprosy is done by acid-fast bacilli in a skin biopsy or by detecting the DNA which is curable with a treatment known as multidrug therapy. Multidrug therapy (MDT) is the most effective treatment and after the first monthly dose there is no chance of infection.
