Track 3: Physiology, Biochemistry and immunology of the skin

Skin acts as a physical barrier and provides protection against foreign invaders. Skin is characterised as primary immune system as they are considered to be a unit specialised cells of the body system. Some of these cells observe invasion by foreign proteins, like microorganism and viruses, while different cells have the capability of destroying and removing such material. Skin consists of distinct layers. The most superficial (most exterior) layer is the epidermis. The epidermis is a stratified squamous epithelium. It has stacked layers of cells. Below the epidermis lies the dermis and below that we find the subcutaneous fat, or sub cutis. Dozens of different Skin infections exist, with huge variation in symptoms and severity. Some of the most common skin conditions include Contact allergies, Alopecia, Psoriasis, Blistering disorders, Rashes, Atopic Dermatitis.

Track 6: Pigmentary disorders

Depigmentation therapy refers to medical treatments that remove skin pigmentation. Depigmentation therapy is used in someone that has widespread, but incomplete, vitiligo on the face and/or other sites, in an attempt to improve their appearance. The most commonly used depigmenting agent is monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone (MBEH). If the patient cannot tolerate MBEH, or if treatment fails, combination therapies or other treatments may be considered. Depigmentation therapy may be considered in the management of treatment resistant vitiligo affecting more than 50% of the body surface area or affecting cosmetically sensitive, exposed body sites.

Track 7: Dermatopathology

Dermatopathology is a joint subspecialty of dermatology and pathology and to a lesser extent of surgical pathology that focuses on the study of cutaneous diseases at a microscopic and molecular level. It also encompasses analyses of the potential causes of skin diseases at a basic level. Dermatopathologists work in close association with clinical dermatologists. In fact, most of them are trained primarily in dermatology themselves. Dermatologists are able to recognize most skin diseases based on their appearances, anatomic distributions, and behavior. Sometimes, however, those criteria do not allow a conclusive diagnosis to be made, and skin biopsies are taken to be examined under the microscope or are subject to other molecular tests. That process reveals the histology of the disease and results in a specific diagnostic interpretation. In some cases, additional specialized testing needs to be performed on biopsies, including immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and molecular-pathologic analysis.

Track 8: Esthetic and Cosmetic dermatology

Aesthetic medicine includes both surgical procedures (liposuction, facelifts, breast implants, Radio frequency ablation) and non-surgical procedures (radio frequency skin tightening, non-surgical liposuction, chemical peel), and practitioners may utilize a combination of both. Although esthetic medicine procedures are typically elective, they can significantly improve quality of life, psychological wellbeing and social function. Skin care is a routine daily procedure in many settings, such as skin that is either too dry or too moist, and prevention of incontinence-associated dermatitis and prevention of skin injuries. Skin care is a component in wound healing, neonates, elderly, stomas, radiation treatment and with some medications

Track 9: Skin Cancer: Neoplasms of the skin

Neoplasm is an abnormal growth of tissue, and when also forming a mass is commonly referred to as a tumour or tumour. This abnormal growth (neoplasia) usually but not always forms a mass. Skin cancers are cancers that arise from the skin. They are due to the development of abnormal cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body. There are three main types: basal-cell cancer (BCC), squamous cell cancer (SCC) and melanoma. The first two together along with a number of less common skin cancers are known as non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Basal-cell cancer grows slowly and can damage the tissue around it but is unlikely to spread to distant areas or result in death. It often appears as a painless raised area of skin that may be shiny with small blood vessel running over it or may present as a raised area with an ulcer.

Track 10: Pediatric dermatology

A pediatric dermatologist is a dermatologist who studies in detecting and treating children, as well as new-borns and small kids. This medical doctor first becomes a dermatologist. Extra study and training are required to grow into a pediatric dermatologist. Selected diseases that affect the skin, hair, or nails are more communal in children. Some of these diseases only occur in children. Diseases that a paediatric dermatologist is likely to treat include: Atopic dermatitis (also called eczema), marks at the time of birth (including port-wine stains), PsoriasisSkin disease that a child is born with, Skin conditions like, Vitiligo, Warts.

Track 11: Rheumatological diseases

Our immune system is an amazing network of cells that function from very basic to highly complex levels. The purpose of this system is to protect us from our environment and watch for any early damage in our own cells. Sometimes, however, the system goes awry and misreads signals. As a result, our defenses do not recognize our own body at work, and begin “attacking” cells. This leads to illnesses called autoimmune (self-immune) diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation of the joints), systemic lupus erythematosus (commonly known as “lupus,” an inflammatory disease of connective tissue), and vasculitis (inflammation of a vessel of the body).

There are various diagnostic tests that can be performed "in house" by veterinarians to help with everyday dermatological cases. Skin scrapings should be the most common diagnostic test performed in veterinary dermatology. A dull scalpel blade or similar instrument is moistened with mineral oil and used to scrape away some of the epidermis, in which may reside a number of different parasites. A trichogram is used to visualize the hair for evidence of pruritus (self- inflicted alopecia), dermatophytosis, endocrine alopecia, pigmentation defects, and growth phase. For Allergy Testing Atopic Dermatitis – Intradermal testing (IDT, IDST) and aeroallergen-specific IgE serum testing (ASIST, in vitro testing) are considered important tests for the demonstration of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity in atopic dogs.

Track 14: Hair Loss Management and Modern techniques of Hair transplantation

Androgenic alopecia (also known as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia androgenetica, or male pattern baldness) is hair loss that occurs due to an underlying susceptibility of hair follicles to androgenic miniaturization. Hair Therapy and Transplantation is a medical and surgical process adapted to minimize hair loss and to promote hair growth. Hair transplantation is surgery that involves removing a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head and using it to fill an area with thin or no hair. Since hair naturally grows in groupings of 1 to 4 hairs, today’s most advanced techniques harvest and transplant these naturally occurring 1–4 hair "follicular units" in their natural groupings. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair. This hair transplant procedure is called Follicular unit transplantation

Track 16: Human Papillomavirus

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a DNA virus from the papillomavirus family. This virus usually infects humans. HPVs infect only in keratinocytes of the skin or mucous membranes. Most HPV infections will cause no physical symptoms; however, in some people may cause premalignant lesions that results cancer in cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, oropharynx and anus. In particular, HPV16 and HPV18 are known to cause around 70% of cervical cancer cases.

Track 17: Diagnosis and Tests for Venereal diseases

Blood tests can confirm the diagnosis of HIV or later Syphilis. Some STI’s can be confirmed with a urine sample. If someone have active genital sores, testing fluid and samples from the sores may be done to diagnose the infection. Laboratory tests of material from a genital sore or discharge are used to diagnose the most common bacterial and some viral STI’s at an early stage.

Track 18: Prevention for Venereal diseases

The interventions for preventing the spread of STDs and HIV should take into consideration the role of human physiology, human behavioural patterns and sociocultural influences. STD and HIV prevention cannot be addressed by behaviour and barrier methods alone. Other factors such as family units and values, provision of housing to minimize disruption of family life, employment, education, religion, culture, age, gender and so on need to be kept in mind at all times.

Track 19: Management for Venereal Diseases

UNAIDS and WHO strongly recommend the adoption of the syndromic diagnosis and treatment of STDs. Syndromic case management is based on classifying the main causative agents giving rise to a particular clinical condition or syndrome, such as the syndrome of urethral discharge in men. It then uses flowcharts which help the health service provider reach a diagnosis and decide on treatment. The treatment covers all the important causes of the syndrome.

Track 20: Treatment for the Venereal Disease

Most STDs can be effectively treated with drugs. However some strains of bacteria and viruses such as HIV have become resistant to some drugs making treatment more difficult. Resistance to drugs is likely to increase because drugs are sometimes misused. People who are treated for a bacterial STD should abstain from their sexual intercourse until the infection has been eliminated from them and their sex partners. Thus, sex partners should be tested and treated simultaneously. Viral STDs specially Herpes, hepatitis B and C and HIV infection usually can be controlled but not yet cure except hepatitis C.
